The Crop Plan and the Weather
There's a thing that happens every January in a farming operation. You sit down with last year's notes, a clean calendar, and whatever the almanac is saying about the coming season — knowing full well the almanac is mostly optimistic. You write out the plan anyway. Not because the plan will hold. Because without it, you've got nothing to adjust when it doesn't.
That's what this year looks like for Gardener of Life.
Three pillars running in parallel. Food and diet every Monday. Health and wellness every Wednesday. Tools and technology every Friday. Fifty-two weeks of it, planted in a row, one season's worth of thinking written down before the ground thaws.
And somewhere in the middle of laying that out, I kept coming back to sardines.
Stay with me.
When your appetite is mostly gone — which happens, for a lot of reasons, at a lot of ages, and more often now with GLP-1 medications changing how people relate to hunger — you still have to eat. The question isn't how to make a meal impressive. The question is how to make it possible. Sardines. Salmon. Cod. Three fish, different enough to rotate, simple enough to actually do. Protein that earns its place when you're eating less of everything.
That's a Monday question. What do you eat when eating is hard?
But it points at something bigger, which is what The Long View is for.
We make plans for what we think the season will be. Then the season does what it wants. The good farmers I grew up around — my dad, my grandfather, the neighbors whose fields ran alongside ours — none of them were surprised by this. They expected the weather to have opinions. They built that into the plan.
What they didn't do was stop planning.
A crop plan that leaves no room for the weather isn't a plan. It's a wish. And a wish doesn't tell you what to do when June comes in dry and July comes in late. The plan does. Because the plan has decision points built into it — if this, then that — and those decision points are what you lean on when you can't see past the next week.
I've laid out 52 weeks of content here. I know what the first ten look like reasonably well. After that, things get softer. By week 30, I've got placeholders where I expect ideas to live. By week 47, honestly, I've got a direction and a question mark.
That's not a failure of planning. That's what an honest plan looks like.
The three pillars aren't arbitrary. Food, health, technology — these are the three places most of us actually live when we're trying to take care of ourselves in the second half. What we eat. How our bodies are doing. What tools we're using to track any of it, or just to stay connected to the work we still care about.
The technology pillar starts this Friday with the Mac as a creative tool. Not a review. More like a conversation about what it means to understand something you've used for years without ever really stopping to look at it. That's a Friday question.
The health and wellness piece will find its stride on Wednesdays. I've got some ground I want to cover there — sleep, inflammation, what the research actually says versus what the internet says it says. More on that as the season develops.
And Monday keeps coming back to the table. Literally. What do you eat, and why does it still matter, and how do you make it simple enough to actually do when simple is all you've got?
Here's what I know about crop plans: the best ones I ever made left room for what the weather was going to do. Not "if it rains." Not "if the frost comes late." Just — here is the shape of what we're growing, and here are the places where the ground can breathe.
This year is the shape of what we're growing.
Week 47 is where the ground breathes.
I don't know what it looks like yet. That's the point.
The Long View publishes every Tuesday. If someone in your life is trying to pay closer attention to how they eat, how they feel, or what tools they're actually using — Please send it too them to subscribe!
