Sunday Digest July 26/26
This week's ledger, three items. Same lesson underneath each one: what you assumed was there and what's actually there aren't automatically the same thing, and the only way to close that gap is to go look.
Monday, Food & Diet — Twenty-seven years of farming and I never once grew a legume. So the dried lentils and chickpeas in my kitchen aren't inherited wisdom, they're a fresh experiment. I figured canned was the lesser version, the shortcut you settle for. What I've found a few months in is that it's the same bean, just further along — rinse, onion, garlic, ten minutes to dinner, and I don't think less of the meal anymore. Still finding out what I think on this one.
Wednesday, Health & Wellness — I figured a continuous glucose monitor would track meals: eat sweet, line goes up. That's maybe a tenth of the story. The line moves for sleep, stress, a walk — one morning it was high before I'd eaten a thing, just the body's own overnight hormones doing their work. I've stopped expecting it to agree with what I log elsewhere. Some spikes have a clean explanation. Some don't.
Friday, Apple & Technology — A friend's phone went into a pond, and her first question wasn't about the phone, it was what she'd lose. Turned out to be mostly nothing — iCloud had it. That sent me checking my own setup, three machines stitched together with Universal Control, which makes you sloppy about backups in a specific way: when everything feels connected, you assume everything's covered. It isn't, automatically. Found two things I'd assumed were syncing that weren't. Four minutes of checking, and the fence had a post I hadn't looked at in years.
A farmer checking a field doesn't get a pass-fail from the dirt. He gets information, and figures out what it's telling him over time. Worth asking, once in a while, what you'd actually find if you looked.
This still in development Will be up and complete August 2,2026 thank you for your understanding.
