Glucose and Sleep — The Connection Most People Miss

I pulled up two nights on the Libre 3 app last week, side by side, because I couldn't stop thinking about the difference. One night the Oura Ring gave me an 89 sleep score — deep sleep where it should be, heart rate dropped and stayed down, the kind of night you wake up from and just feel settled. The other night was a 61. Woke twice, restless the whole back half, the kind of sleep that isn't really sleep so much as lying there with your eyes closed.
The glucose traces from those two nights don't look like they belong to the same person.
On the good-sleep night, my line went flat sometime after midnight and stayed flat — a long, boring ribbon in the 90s that barely moved until morning. On the bad-sleep night, the line had shape to it. A rise around 2am. Another bump closer to 4. Nothing dramatic, nothing that would set off an alarm, but a pattern, repeating, that wasn't there the night before. Same dinner, roughly. Same Mounjaro dose, same week. The only thing that changed was how well I slept.
I've read enough of the research — cortisol rising in fragmented sleep, insulin sensitivity dropping off in proportion to how much deep and REM sleep gets cut short — to know this isn't some private discovery. It's well documented. What the studies don't tell you is what it looks like at 3am in your own kitchen, half-asleep, glancing at a number on your phone and wondering if you're seeing a real pattern or just noise. A study runs the same protocol on forty people for six weeks under controlled conditions. My body runs the experiment every single night, with variables nobody controls — what I ate, how hot the bedroom was, whether Sophie decided 2am was conversation time.
That's the part farming taught me before medicine ever did. You can read everything there is to read about a field — the soil reports, the irrigation schedule, the projected yield — and it still won't tell you what that particular field does on a night when the wind shifts. You learn to watch the actual ground, not just the paperwork about the ground. The CGM is the closest thing I've got to walking the field at night with a flashlight. It doesn't explain anything. It just shows me what's there.
What I keep coming back to is how quiet the good nights are. Not just quiet on the Oura score — quiet on the glucose line too. Nothing happening is apparently a kind of health signal all its own, which is a strange thing to sit with when so much of the wellness world is built around doing more, optimizing more, chasing a number upward. Here the good outcome is the flattest, most uneventful line on the chart.
I don't have a protocol to hand you out of this. I haven't fixed my sleep — some nights are still a 61, and I still don't fully know why. What I have is two overlaid graphs and a stronger sense that whatever is happening at 3am, awake or asleep, isn't separate from what happens to my blood sugar. It's the same system, just showing up in two different apps.
If you're already wearing a CGM, it's worth the five minutes to lay a bad-sleep night next to a good one and just look. You may notice what I noticed. You may not. Either way, the body was keeping its own records the whole time — we just don't usually think to go check them.
